At the Farnborough air show in Hampshire sir Keir Starmer unveiled his plans about solving the issue with Britain’s reliance on foreign workers in construction and other sectors.

For this purpose, Skills England, a new agency aimed at reforming skills training was born. It will cooperate with employers, unions, colleges and the Migration Advisory Committee in efficiently identifying areas with lack of skilled workers. Skills minister Jacqui Smith said that the project would involve better use of existing funds without the necessity of injecting new cash.

The PM’s new concept follows criticism of the existing Apprenticeship Levy, which since 2017 has raised more than £2billion of cash that remained unused. The new Growth and Skills Levy will give employers more freedom to use the money for training staff. Moreover, companies will be able to spend 50% of their levy contribution on training of their employees of any age.

Sir Keir aims to create a coherent skills system and predicts that his plan will help to fill half a million job vacancies.
